Aquarium Air Pump Size: Two Numbers, Not One Gallon Band

Depth sets the pressure, volume sets nothing

Depth, not the gallon band printed on the box, is what a pump actually has to overcome at the stone. A 40-gallon breeder 16 inches deep asks less pressure than a 40-gallon tall at 24 inches, from the same rated volume. No source captured here quantifies that difference.

Charterhouse Aquatics sizes pumps by volume band: nano to 40 litres, small 40–100, medium 100–250, large 250–500, extra-large above that. That set of bands is itself contested. Bubble Magus, on the same question, says depth matters as well and that deeper tanks need a more powerful pump because air must be pushed down against head pressure. Both are describing the same pump. Only one of them is describing the constraint that stops it working.

Here is what is at stake. If you buy on gallons and your tank is tall, the depth the air must be pushed against is not accounted for; no source captured here establishes what that does to a diaphragm pump's service life. This piece sizes pumps by the pressure they have to overcome: static head from depth, plus whatever the diffuser adds. The seven pumps here are compared on published specifications, not on measurement.

One correction worth carrying through everything that follows: an air pump moves no water. Charterhouse Aquatics puts it plainly. Circulation comes from rising bubbles dragging surface water down through the tank. Flow is a side effect of pressure won.

So the pump's real job is defeating depth, then producing bubbles. Sized by gallons, you get the second without checking the first.

Same 20 gallons, three shapes, three different pumps

Volume tells you almost nothing. Three tanks holding the same 20 gallons ask for three different pumps, because the water sits at three different depths and depth is what the diaphragm has to fight.

A 20-gallon long is comparatively shallow, so depth is the least of the pump's problems and the volume band is doing most of the work. No source captured here gives a head figure for that depth, or a rated output for any named pump.

Reading a label: the derating rule I use

A gallon rating on a box is a free-flow number, or close to it. Treat it as the output the pump makes into open air at sea level, then subtract for everything you ask it to push against. Here is the sequence I apply to every label.

  • Read the volume band as a shallow-tank figure. Charterhouse Aquatics frames volume-matching as the first sizing step, and it works for standard 12-inch tanks; below that depth the band is honest, above it the band is optimistic.
  • Allow extra output for depth beyond a standard tank. How much is not something any source captured here quantifies. Depth is named as a sizing factor but never given a number, and no named pump's rated output was captured.
  • Allow something for ageing. Charterhouse Aquatics lists worn diaphragms alongside blocked air stones and kinked tubing as a cause of reduced bubble output that mimics undersizing, though no source captured here quantifies the decay or how often diaphragms need replacing.
  • Let the device spec override the tank spec. Bubble Magus is explicit that sponge filter makers state their own required pump flow; follow that figure, not the gallon chart.

Six failure signatures: undersized, oversized, or just blocked

Undersizing, oversizing and blockage can all present as "not enough bubbles". Charterhouse Aquatics notes that blocked air stones, kinked tubing and worn diaphragms produce faults that look like an undersized pump but are not. The symptoms separate cleanly if you look at what the air is driving rather than at the bubble count.

Undersized

Which mistake can you undo? The oversized one. Charterhouse Aquatics notes it can be dialled back either with the pump's own output adjustment or with inexpensive airline control valves. An undersized pump has no such fix.

Splitting one outlet is not free capacity

Bubble Magus notes that a single-outlet pump can be split with gang valves rather than buying a multi-outlet model. Which of these seven suits which tank

Take the 20-gallon tall from the opening. Sizing it on depth would need a head figure for the column and a rated pressure for each candidate pump, and no source captured here supplies either. Every sizing statement available is a retailer's or vendor's summary, with no named pump's rated volume, output or wattage reproduced.

Everything else here has to be judged on inference, and the criteria have to be applied evenly: rated pressure, rated flow, outlet count, what arrives in the box, and what supply it needs.
