Protein Skimmer Ratings Measure the Wrong Thing

The rating is a translation, and two retailers translate it in opposite directions

Two tabs, two answers. On one, Bulk Reef Supply says to take your aquarium's total water volume and match it against the manufacturer's recommended tank size, and adds that it is always better to undersize than oversize because an oversized skimmer simply won't work. On the other, Aquarium Store Depot's reviewer says gallon ratings are always optimistic and you should size up, never down. Both are right, which is the problem with a protein skimmer rating.

A gallon figure on a skimmer box is not a measurement of your tank. None of the sources here state what a gallon rating physically measures, or what test conditions and bioload assumptions sit behind it. Change the assumed stocking and the same body covers a different tank. Reef Octopus publishes a three-tier bioload rating for the Regal 200INT: 400 US gallons light, 300 medium, 200 heavy, sump excluded. One skimmer, a 2x spread.

Most of the ratings in this set are published as a single number rather than a spread, and no source states which stocking assumption sits behind them. No source in this set adjudicates the disagreement or explains what assumptions each retailer is correcting for.

Which volume does the rating measure? A 120-gallon audit

Take a 120-gallon display with a 30-gallon sump. The rating you shop against depends entirely on which of those numbers you carry to the store, and the gap is bigger than most buyers expect.

Start with the display. Rock, sand and operating water levels mean neither the display figure nor the sump figure equals the water actually in the system, so display volume and total system volume give different numbers for the same tank. None of the sources here quantify that gap.

Where the two readings split the catalog

Dalua's 2025 buyer's guide tells you to check the skimmer's rating against display volume and bioload. Bulk Reef Supply tells you to match total water volume against the manufacturer's recommended tank size. Top Shelf Aquatics agrees with Bulk Reef Supply and adds bioload on top.

Because Top Shelf Aquatics sorts its catalog into bands at 50, 125, 200 and 350 gallons, a tank near a band boundary can fall into adjacent model tiers depending on which volume you carry to the store.

Bulk Reef Supply and Top Shelf Aquatics both base sizing on total system water rather than display volume alone. Note that Reef Octopus excludes the sump from its Regal 200INT rating, which is exactly the kind of footnote that turns a published figure into a guess.

The number you end up with is still a volume, though. That is the deeper problem, and volume is not what a skimmer removes.

So which is it: always undersize, or always size up?

Both, depending on the tank. Bulk Reef Supply says it is always better to undersize a skimmer than oversize it, because an oversized skimmer simply won't work. Dalua's 2025 guide says to go one size up if the tank is fish-heavy or fed aggressively, and Aquarium Store Depot's reviewer says manufacturer gallon ratings are always optimistic and you should size up, never down. They are answering different questions about different tanks.

Where the crossover sits

Sort it in ten seconds

  • METALBEE, not for you if this matters: body material is listed as ABS in the specs while the copy claims high-strength acrylic — the two do not agree.
  • Simplicity 240DC, not for you if this matters: 19.5 in. tall, so sump chamber clearance has to be checked before buying.
  • IOAOI, not for you if this matters: hang-on designs are more prone to overflow during break-in.

Feed rate, not gallons: sizing to grams of dry food per day

Bioload, not volume alone, is what several of these retailers say should drive sizing: Top Shelf Aquatics and Dalua both fold stocking and feeding into the decision, and Dalua notes flatly that a gallon rating cannot compensate for overfeeding. No source here quantifies a feed-rate sizing method or gives grams-per-day figures.

The arithmetic that makes ratings comparable runs the other way, from gallon band back to air draw. Nyos rates the Quantum 120 at up to 500 l/h of air against a 40–125 gallon band, on 8 watts. That is a band wide enough that the air available per rated gallon varies by a factor of three across it.

The conversion, step by step

Air draw in litres per hour is the one specification that might allow a like-for-like comparison across brands, but no source in this set publishes thresholds for l/h per gallon, and no page relates air volume to rated gallons at all.

The catch: air draw is absent from nearly every source here. Only the Nyos figures appear, with the Quantum 300 rated by the manufacturer for 250–1000 gallons on 2 x 22 watts. Where a manufacturer publishes an air figure, it is the number worth comparing.

Five physical checks that override the number on the box

Measure before you read the rating.

Dalua states plainly that a skimmer has to be run at the manufacturer's recommended water depth for the rated bubble performance to hold. Top Shelf Aquatics likewise notes that required water depth, along with sump or display space, constrains the choice.

Five checks, in the order they disqualify a purchase:

  • Operating water depth in the sump chamber. Skimmergeek gives the Coralife Super Skimmer's requirement as about 7 inches of water depth.
  • Sump footprint, measured at the chamber not the sump. Skimmergeek puts the Coralife Super Skimmer at about 6 inches wide, and gives its tubing as about 2 inches in diameter, a figure buyers must check against glass tops or other secured areas.
  • Body height plus lid clearance. Skimmergeek puts the Coralife's total body height at about 21 inches. Measure from the sump floor to the underside of the stand's top rail, not to the water line.
  • Cup removal clearance above the body. Skimmergeek notes the Coralife needs roughly 7 inches of clearance from a wall or other obstruction to hang at all.
  • Mounting method, which changes the effective rating of the same hardware. Skimmergeek records the Coralife needing at least a 40 gallon tank to work as a hang-on-back unit while serving 10–30 gallon tanks as a sub skimmer. Same body, different number.

Aquarium Store Depot goes further: in-sump beats hang-on-back every time a sump exists. Aquarium Store Depot describes hang-on-back as the format for systems without a sump.

Seven skimmers read against those criteria

Nothing below rests on a tank in front of me. This is a specification comparison built from what the makers and retailers publish, read against the same criteria used earlier: footprint and clearance, air draw and pump type, whether the rating carries a bioload qualifier, and how much adjustment range the pump gives you. Where a source gives no figure, I say so rather than filling the gap.

The clearest split is not gallons. It is whether the pump can be turned down.

Reef Octopus is the one maker in this set that publishes a rating as a range against stocking, with the Regal 200INT at 400 gallons light, 300 medium and 200 heavy. Most published figures are single numbers with no feeding assumption attached: Top Shelf Aquatics lists the Reef Octopus Elite 200-SSS as rated by its maker for aquariums up to 400 gallons, and the Coralife Super Skimmer line is rated at 65, 125 and 220 gallons across three models, each carrying a 1 year warranty.

Where adjustable DC changes the arithmetic

Bulk Reef Supply notes that AC pump skimmers are cheaper but limited in adjustment because pump speed cannot be controlled, while DC skimmers offer a wider adjustment range and are easier to dial in. No source states how far a DC skimmer's usable span stretches across rating tiers.

Top Shelf Aquatics, for its part, recommends choosing a skimmer rated slightly above the tank size for added efficiency and future flexibility, and Dalua advises sizing up one model for fish-heavy or heavily fed tanks. BRS's advice runs the other way.

After it is running: does the cup tell you the size was right?

The collection cup answers the sizing question that the box could not. Give the unit its break-in first. Dalua states most skimmers need a few days to a week before producing consistent skim, and Aquarium Store Depot's reviewer puts the range wider still, from 48 hours to three weeks of babysitting. Judge nothing before then.

What the cup tells you

After break-in, what lands in the cup is a diagnostic, and it reads in two directions:

  • Dry skim. Dark, viscous, foul-smelling skimmate in small daily volume is the target. Bulk Reef Supply describes dry skim as the product of tiny bubbles and reduced airflow.

The oversized failure mode, and what it is not
